The study of History is an ever-expanding discipline which encompasses all aspects of human experience in all parts of the world. The teaching and research expertise of our faculty is diverse, and includes such fields as social, political, cultural, economic, business, women's and environmental History, with a concentration on Canada, the United States, Europe, Latin America, and the post-colonial world.

Students of History become involved in the process of creating a shared understanding of past events, but they also explore those areas of History which are relevant to their own concerns. A distinctive element of our Honours program is that fourth-year students may elect to write an Honours thesis (History 4901), under the individual supervision of a faculty member, on a topic which they have chosen themselves.

A degree in History prepares students for the job market in a variety of ways. Because a knowledge of the past is essential for understanding the present and anticipating the future, graduates of our programs are found wherever their analytical skills are needed, including business, law, and government service. History courses also develop students' writing, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Many of our graduates follow careers in teaching, and others find employment in History-related fields such as archival work, libraries, and historical research.

The Department of History offers a variety of degree options. Students may take a three-year program with a Major in History (which requires a minimum of five History courses) or a four-year Honours degree in History (which requires a minimum of ten History courses). The Department offers several combined (double major) Honours programs, such as History and English, History and Philosophy, History and Political Science, and History and Women's Studies. Students may also combine a Major in History with an Honours degree in Outdoor Recreation, Parks, and Tourism. History programs are also offered concurrently with a BEd from the Department of Undergraduate Studies in Education.

Many history courses are offered in alternate years only and, in order to include them in a program, students may be advised to deviate from the normal sequence (taking a fourth year course in third year, for example). Students desirous of including specific courses should therefore consult the Department Chair.

Students thinking of majoring in history might consider combining the offerings of the history department with courses offered by other departments. For example, a student could combine the study of the history of a region and period with related courses on literature, culture, art, philosophy, geography, political science or some other discipline. A double major or combined honours program allows students to develop a more specialized knowledge of history and can make for a more rewarding university experience.
