Geography is the study of spatial patterns and processes on the surface of the earth, mainly in the context of human activities. Geography explores where people and activities are located, why they are located where they are, what changes are occurring in these patterns, what impacts these changes are likely to have on human and physical environments, and what should be done about these impacts. Physical geography deals with spatial aspects of the atmosphere, land surface and waters while human geography is concerned with cultural, political and economic forces that lie behind the distribution of human activities. The Department of Geography and the Environment at Lakehead University offers a broad undergraduate program of study covering physical, human, applied and regional geography, as well as a number of courses on the techniques in geography. Research interests and teaching specializations of the faculty reflect not only the breadth of geography, but also a variety of scales ranging from local to regional to global.

The Department of Geography and the Environment offers arts and science undergraduate degrees in Geography and a certificate in Mapping Sciences. Geography programs are also offered concurrently with a BEd degree from the Department of Undergraduate Studies in Education and a Geography Major is available in the HBASc and HBASc/BEd offered at the Orillia Campus only. An HBESc and HBES with Geography Major are also offered in the Division of Environmental Studies.

Students are also advised of the interdisciplinary minor concentration in Northern Studies, and the interdisciplinary programs in Geoarchaeology.

Students in the HBSc, HBSc with Geology Minor and HBESc programs who are interested in the possibility of becoming registered as Professional Geoscientists are directed to study the appropriate web sites to determine the number and type of courses required. Details of the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO) can be found at

Note about the Certificate Program in Geomatics
The objectives of this program are to develop students' expertise in the many disciplines of Geomatics, and to increase students' awareness of how the synergies of these geospatial and digital technologies maximize the potential uses for spatial information. Geomatics coursework includes cartography, map reading, air photo interpretation, digital photogrammetry, geographic information systems, and remote sensing.

Students considering completion of this certificate should consult with the Chair of the Department of Geography and the Environment.
