MSc Electrical and Computer Engineering (TB)

There are two options for the Masters Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering: (A) a thesis-based MSc, and (B) a course-based MSc that may include a cooperative education internship. Both MSc degree options require completion of 5 full-course equivalent (FCE) courses as further defined under each option.

Students from the course-based options may be invited to convert to the thesis option. In exceptional cases, students in the thesis-based option may be permitted to convert to one of the course-based options. Changing options requires the submission and approval of a Graduate Request for Program Change/Withdrawal.

The option pursued will be noted on the student’s official transcript.

(A) Thesis-Based

The requirements for the thesis-based MSc program are 5 full-course equivalent (FCE) made up of: 4 half-courses (2 FCEs), a seminar course Engineering 5012 (0.5 FCE) and a thesis Engineering 5901 (2.5 FCEs).

Thesis-based MSc students must take at least three half-courses from the corresponding list of approved courses for the program. One of the four half-courses of the program can be a reading course (Engineering 5739), a graduate course from another program, or a senior undergraduate course, providing it has not been taken before and providing it is approved by the supervisor and the Graduate Coordinator. The student’s choice of courses must be approved by the graduate supervisor and the Graduate Program Coordinator.

The thesis is expected to critically evaluate and apply current research. Often advances in the state of the art are proposed in the Master's thesis. The student will be guided by a thesis supervisor and a supervisory committee to be established by the end of the first term after enrollment. A research thesis topic should be submitted to the student's thesis supervisor by the end of the second term of studies. When completed the thesis will be examined under university regulations.

(B) Course-Based

The requirements for the course-based MSc program consist of the following.

(i) Engineering 5013 Research Methods and Communication for Engineers (0.5 FCE)

(ii) Engineering electives at least 3.0 FCE of engineering graduate courses, with at least 2.0 FCE selected from the approved list of courses for the specific program. Only one half-course of the 3.0 FCEs may be a reading course (Engineering 5739) or a senior undergraduate half-course that has not previously been taken.

(iii) Supplemental Electives: up to 1.5 FCEs may be selected from any combination of the following:

  1. 1.5 FCE from another existing graduate program at Lakehead University. Outside of other engineering programs, these courses typically include graduate level mathematics, science or business courses.
  2. One half-course of the 1.5 FCEs may be a senior undergraduate half-course that has not previously been taken, provided that no Undergraduate Engineering course is used to satisfy (ii).
  3. Optionally, a 1.0 FCE MSc Project course Engineering 5804 may be counted towards the 1.5 FCE. Students are eligible to apply for MSc Project if they have successfully completed 1.0 FCE of engineering electives and have the approval of their graduate supervisor.

The student’s choice of courses must be approved by the Graduate Program Coordinator.

Cooperative Education/Internship

Students in the course-based MSc option are eligible to apply for the cooperative education experience after completion of four graduate half-courses from the approved list of MSc courses with an average of at least 75 and no failed courses. Co-op employment for a minimum of two terms (8 months) must be successfully completed to satisfy co-op requirements for the degree; however students may be employed on co-op for up to a maximum of four terms (16 months) as part of the program. Students must enroll and complete the requirements for Engineering 5990 and 5991; the additional work terms Engineering 5992 and Engineering 5993 are optional. Co-op courses do not apply toward the 5.0 FCE requirements for the MSc degree

Students interested in a co-op placement submit the application to the Program Coordinator at least one term (4 months) in advance of the proposed date of the placement. The Department's decision as to the suitability of each candidate will be based primarily on academic performance. Successful candidates will work with the University Co-op Office in their search for suitable employment. Upon completion of the co-op placement, the student will complete the remaining course-based MSc program requirements.
