Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education, (Indigenous Learning Major) Intermediate/Senior – Indigenous Teacher Education Program

This five-year degree plan is designed for students of Indigenous ancestry and leads to an Intermediate-Senior teaching credential in Indigenous Studies in Grades 7 through 12. Indigenous Language, French, or other subjects such as Geography may be integrated within this degree program to create an interesting and valuable teacher preparation experience. This degree program offers a great deal of flexibility and opportunity to “customize” the degree program for the needs of Indigenous students and their communities.

Indigenous Studies is the first teachable for this five-year degree program (5 FCE required). Students must have a minimum of 3 FCE in the second teachable. Students who wish to pursue a language as a second teachable, either an Indigenous Language or French, must have a minimum of 5 FCEs in the teachable.

First Year:
(a) Indigenous Learning 1100

(c) One-half FCE in English chosen from: English 1015, 1016, 1115 
(d) One FCE in a Indigenous Language chosen from a combination of: Cree 1010/Indigenous Learning 1011 and Cree 1012/Indigenous Learning 1013 OR Ojibwe 1013/Indigenous Learning 1014 and Ojibwe 1015/Indigenous Learning 1016 OR Ojibwe 1014/Indigenous Learning 1015 and Ojibwe 1016/Indigenous Learning 1017
(e) One FCE in the second teachable See List of all Teachables (If the second teachable is Indigenous Language, choose an addtional FCE in an Indigenous Language course. If the second teachable is French, choose one FCE in French language courses.)
(f) One-half FCE elective in Type B courses or an additional half FCE in French language (if French is the second teachable)

Second Year:
(a) Indigenous Learning 2805 and 1310
(b) One FCE in Indigenous Learning at the second year level
(c) English 2717/Indigenous Learning 2717 and one-half FCE in English chosen from: English 3750, 3751 or 2510
(d) One FCE in the second teachable (If the second teachable is Indigenous Language, choose Ojibwe 2001. If the second teachable is French, choose one FCE in French language courses.)
(e) Education 2130
Note: One FCE of the electives must be Type B courses.

Third Year:
(a) Indigenous Learning 3501
(b) One FCE in Indigenous Learning at the second or third year level
(c) Two FCEs in the second teachable (If the second teachable is Indigenous Language, choose Ojibwe 3001 AND one FCE in NALA courses in the summer semester. If the second teachable is French, choose two FCEs in French language courses.)
(d) One-half FCE in Aboriginal Education courses chosen from: Education 3130, 3131, 4395
(e) One-half FCE open elective or one half FCE in French language (if French is the second teachable)
