Honours Bachelor of Social Work

Four Year program
The following pattern of courses indicates the compulsory and elective courses leading to the Honours Bachelor of Social Work (HBSW) degree. The courses listed below with course numbers are compulsory for the degree. If a student wishes to take courses other than those listed below, he/she must obtain the consent of the Director of the School. All elective courses must be taken in consultation with the School.

First Year:
(a) Social Work 1100
(b) Four FCE electives (Social Work, and courses cross-calendared with Social Work, excluded)

Note:
Students are encouraged to select the four FCE electives, excluding Social Work and courses cross-calendared with Social Work, from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities; however, electives may be taken from any Faculty. A maximum of seven (7) first year FCEs may be taken.

Students are advised that they must apply for admission to Year 3. Since application does not guarantee admission, students may be admitted to an alternate program. Bearing this in mind, students should consider requirements for other programs when selecting elective courses. Students with more than 14.5 FCEs are not eligible to apply to Year 3.

Second Year:

(a) Social Work 2011 and Social Work 2012
(b) Four FCE electives (Social Work, and courses cross-calendared with Social Work, excluded)

Third Year:
(a) Social Work 3215, 3315, and 3401
(b) Social Work 3500 (1.5 FCE equivalent)
(c) Social Work 4411
(d) One half-course elective in Social Work
(e) One half-course elective (Approval of the Director of the School of Social Work  is needed for electives chosen outside of Social Work)

Fourth Year:
(a) Social Work 4401
(b) Social Work 4500 (1.5 FCE equivalent)
(c) Social Work 4212 and 4405
(d) One half-course elective in Social Work
(e) One half-course elective (Approval of the Director of the School of Social Work  is needed for electives chosen outside of Social Work)

Note: The Indigenous Content Requirement is being met by the completion of Social Work 4411.

In Third and Fourth year, students may choose one of their required electives from another discipline outside the School of Social Work,  permission from the Director of the School of Social Work is needed. To choose this option, please identify a potential half-credit elective course and email the Undergraduate Coordinator with a request to have the elective choice approved. A proposed elective course from another discipline should a) include content directly relevant to Social Work, b) be at the third or fourth year level, c) the student must be eligible to take the course, d) have the pre-requisites required by the department offering the course, and e) the course must also fit the student’s timetable without conflicting with other registered courses.
