Geography Programs Information

Geography is the study of the interrelationships between nature and society.  Geographers explore spatial patterns and processes on the surface of the earth, mainly in the context of human activities, to better understand what changes are occurring.  We research key questions such as ‘what impacts will these changes have on human and physical environments’, and ‘what should be done about these impacts’? Physical geography deals with spatial aspects of the atmosphere, land surface and waters while human geography is concerned with cultural, political and economic forces that lie behind the distribution of human activities.  Together, this approach is effective for understanding and responding to complex issues related to climate change, urban and community sustainability, conservation and ecosystem-based management. The Department of Geography and the Environment at Lakehead University offers a broad undergraduate program of Geography and Environmental Studies that includes both arts and science degrees, as well as the specialized Certificate Program in Geomatics.
