Health Sciences 5335 Social and Legal History of Public Health
A critical overview of the social and legal history of public health initiatives in Canada. Areas to be investigated include: safe water and food regulation; treatment of venereal disease; vaccination; maternal and child welfare; the regulation of alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs; injury prevention; and eugenics and genetic regulation. Throughout the course, race, ethnicity, gender, and class will be prime considerations in understanding the differential impact of public health policies on various populations. Particular attention will be focused on aboriginal health and the problems of the public health model in this context.
