GERONTOLOGY

Dr. Anita B. Chen Lakehead University 30th Anniversary Bursary in Sociology
$540 (O-ABCBI)
Established in 1996, on the occasion of her retirement by friends, relatives and colleagues in recognition of her contribution to Lakehead University and to the Department of Sociology. Awarded annually to a full-time honours student majoring in Sociology (with a Gerontology minor) who has completed his/her third year of studies at this University and is proceeding to the fourth year. The bursary is based on financial need and a minimum 'B' average in Sociology and Gerontology courses.

KINESIOLOGY

Adrian J. Beaucage Memorial Bursary
$150 (AJBBI)
Established in 1987 in memory of Adrian J. Beaucage by his family and many friends in recognition of his contribution to and interest in the Kinesiology program at Lakehead University and in the community. It will be awarded in the second term, in perpetuity, to a third-year Honours Bachelor of Kinesiology student who demonstrates financial need, satisfactory academic standing and who exhibits a commitment to the Kinesiology program through involvement in University athletic activities. Community involvement and citizenship qualities may also be considered. These attributes should be clearly described on the Bursary Application.

Michael E. Grant Memorial Bursary
$1,490 (O-MGRBI)
Created in 1998 in loving memory by his wife, Margaret, in recognition of his career as a teacher and his lifetime interest in athletic activities. Awarded to a mature student majoring in Education and/or Kinesiology on the basis of financial need with a minimum B standing.

Dr. Norm and Mrs. Tish LaVoie Bursary
$700 (O-LAVBI)
Awarded to an in-course Kinesiology student or a student in any discipline who participates in any of the Lakehead University Athletic programs on the basis of financial need and minimum B standing.

Jamie Lockington Bursary
$500 (O-LOCBI)
Established in 1998 by Jamie Lockington and awarded to a student in any year, majoring in Kinesiology, on the basis of financial need and satisfactory academic achievement.

NURSING

Dorothy Adams Memorial Bursary
$1,020 (O-ADDBI)
Awarded to a student in the School of Nursing on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to a student who is a member in good standing of the Colleges of Nurses and interested in public health/community nursing.

Auxiliary to St. Joseph's Care Group Bursary
$300 (A-SJHBI)
Awarded to a student who is entering the Bachelor of Science Nursing Degree program. Preference shall be given to a student from Northwestern Ontario and this award shall be given on the basis of academic standing and financial need.

The Betty Coates Lakehead University 30th Anniversary Memorial Bursary
$1,620 (O-COABI)
Created in 1996 in honour of Betty Claire Snider Coates (BScN 1969) by family and friends celebrating her long-time dedication to and involvement with Lakehead University and its alumni. Awarded to an in-course student in any Bachelor of Science, Honours Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program on the basis of financial need, a minimum 'B' standing and demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in health science; in particular, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, physiotherapy or occupational therapy.

Marvin and Marg Daychakowski Bursary
$520 (O2-MMDBI)
Created in 2004 by Lakehead alumni, who obtained their degrees as mature students. Provided to a sole support parent enrolled in the School of Nursing, on the basis of financial need.

Jose de Cangas Memorial Bursary
2 x $570 (O-CNGBI)
Established in memory of Jose de Cangas by his wife, Helen Wann. Awarded to a student in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree program, on the basis of financial need and satisfactory academic achievement. Preference will be given to a student with a demonstrated interest in mental health.

First Nations and Inuit Health Branch Native Students Bursary for Aboriginal Health

individual bursary may not exceed $1,000
Total award $4,210 (O-MEDBI)
Established to provide incentive to full- and part-time students interested in pursuing Aboriginal Health as a career, and in expanding the current knowledge base of multidisciplinary approaches in those professions geared towards improving Aboriginal health. Awarded to a student of Aboriginal Ancestry, on the basis of financial need, registered in the School of Nursing, including the Native Nurses Entry Program. Preference shall be given to full-time students.

General Hospital of Port Arthur School of Nursing Alumnae Bursary
$710 (O2-GHPBI)
Created by the General Hospital of Port Arthur School of Nursing Alumnae, 1909-1970; and awarded to an in-course nursing student on the basis of financial need and satisfactory academic standing.

Charlotte Grant Bursary in Nursing
$2,110 (O2-CGNBI)
Created in 2003, through the estate of Charlotte Grant, a 1937 graduate of the St. Joseph's School of Nursing. Provided on the basis of financial need and satisfactory academic standing.

The Hamlin Family Fund Nursing Bursaries

4 x $1,280 (O2-HFNBI)
Awarded to any student of aboriginal ancestry registered in Year 2, 3, 4 of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program on the basis of financial need. A minimum of 2 of these bursaries will be given to graduates of the Native Nurses Entry Program (NNEP).

Independent First Nations Alliance (IFNA) Entrance Bursary

Awarded to Native students from IFNA communities; Pikangikum First Nation, Big Trout Lake First Nation, Whitesand First Nation, Lac Seul First Nation, and Muskrat Dam First Nation, entering their first year of a Native Access Program who do not have regular funding. Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic potential.

Benita Kalns Memorial Bursary
$130 (BKMBI)
Established in perpetuity in memory of Benita Kalns by her family and many friends. Awarded annually to a Registered Nurse continuing his/her education. Those continuing in Nursing will be given preference.

Lakehead University School of Nursing Bursary
$600 (O-DNUBI)
Awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the School of Nursing on the basis of financial need.

Philip and June LeBrun and Family Bursary
2 x $370 (O-LEBBI)
Awarded to an in-course student in Civil Engineering on the basis of financial need. If no candidate exists from Civil Engineering, then the bursary may be awarded to a Nursing or a Bachelor of Education student.

Olga Merz Memorial Bursary in Nursing

Established in 1994, by her husband William Merz in loving memory. Awarded to a student entering second year with a 'B' average, who has demonstrated financial need.

Olga Merz OSOTF Memorial Bursaries

Established in 1997 by her husband, William Merz, in loving memory. Awarded to students in any year of the Nursing program on the basis of financial need.

Port Arthur Clinic Bursary
$500 (O-PACBI)
Awarded to an in-course student in the Bachelor of Science, Honours Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science in Nursing program on the basis of financial need and a minimum B standing.

Grace Remus Memorial Bursary
$300 (A-GRMBI)
Awarded on the basis of need to a student in the second year of the Bachelor of Science Nursing Degree program.

St. Joseph's Nurses Alumni Bursary
$1500 (O-STJBI)
Established by members of the alumni, in recognition of the St. Joseph's School of Nursing, 1904-1970. Awarded on the basis of financial need and satisfactory academic standing. Preference will be given to a student who is a member in good standing of the College of Nurses and proceeding with further education.

Margaret E. Tapp Nursing Bursaries

Established in 1995 in memory of Margaret Elizabeth Tapp, long-time resident of Thunder Bay. Awarded to third or fourth year students registered in the Bachelor of Science Nursing program on the basis of financial need.

Mary Tocheri Memorial Bursary

Created in loving memory of Mary Tocheri by her daughter Maria Hensel. Provided to an in-course Nursing student on the basis of financial need and satisfactory academic achievement.

Volunteer Association to the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital Bursaries

Awarded to an in-course student registered in any program related to the field of health services (Nursing, Psychology, Social Work) on the basis of financial need and a minimum B standing.

Anne Whitaker Memorial Bursary

Awarded to native students in the Nursing program who, following graduation, intend to serve for one year of professional care in a community of native peoples. Awarded on the basis of financial need and satisfactory academic standing.

Audrey Wilson Memorial Nursing Bursary
$530 (O-AWIBI)
Established by Margaret MacLean, Darlene Seaver, Luann Sainsbury, and Sheila Arding, in memory of their mother, Audrey Wilson. Awarded on the basis of financial need to a full-time student enrolled in an undergraduate Nursing program.

OUTDOOR RECREATION, PARKS AND TOURISM

Henry "Hank" Akervall Memorial Bursary

Created in loving memory of Hank Akervall in 2000 by family, friends and colleagues. Dr. Akervall had a 30-year career with Lakehead University, ending with his retirement in 1996 as Director of Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism. Awarded to a student in the 3rd or 4th year, School of Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism on the basis of financial need and satisfactory academic achievement.

Lakehead University Outdoor Recreation Students' Society Bursary
2 x $320 (O-ODRBI)
Awarded to a student in Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism in any year, based on financial need and a minimum 'B' standing. Applicants must have demonstrated community involvement.

The Mitchell Family Lakehead University 30th Anniversary Bursary
2 x $830 (O-MFABI)
Awarded to in-course students on the basis of financial need and satisfactory academic standing. Preference will be given to students enrolled in the School of Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism and the Department of Music.

J.D. Young Q.C. Lakehead University 30th Anniversary Bursary in Outdoor Recreation
$250 (JDYBI)
Awarded to a deserving in-course student registered full-time in the Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism program on the basis of financial need.

SOCIAL WORK

Nancy Trebilcock Burrows Bursary
$510 (O-TREBI)
Created in 1998 by the family, in loving memory of Nancy Trebilcock Burrows, who resided in Thunder Bay from 1956 until her death in September, 1998. Awarded to an undergraduate social work student on the basis of financial need.

Anne B. Cochran Bursary in Social Work
$1,560 (O-COCBI)
Established in 1999 by long-time Thunder Bay resident, Anne Cochran. Awarded to a student in the Honours Bachelor of Social Work degree program on the basis of financial need and satisfactory academic standing.

Lakehead University School of Social Work Bursary
$930 (O-DSWBI)
Awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the School of Social Work on the basis of financial need.

Bob and Helen Shumacher Bursary
$1,530 (O-BHSBI)
Established in 2000 by Helen Shumacher to perpetuate the work of the Shumachers towards increasing awareness of schizophrenia. Awarded to a student in Social Work on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to those students with an interest in schizophrenia or allied brain disorders.

Thunder Bay Children's Services Foundation Bursary
$500 (O-TCSBI)
Awarded to a student in any year in any program on the basis of financial need. Preference shall be given to wards of the Childrens' Aid Society. If there are no such eligible candidates in any given year, then the distribution of the bursary may be given to a student in the School of Social Work.
