Mr. and Mrs. James MacAllan Munro Family Memorial Prize - Poetry

$300 (MMPOI)
Poets among Lakehead University students are encouraged to submit their unpublished poems to the Department of English. The submissions will be judged by three members of the Department of English whose decisions will be final. A Lakehead University Mr. and Mrs. James MacAllan Munro Family Memorial Prize - Poetry Entry Form is available on the Office of Student Financial Aid and Awards website.

Mr. and Mrs. James MacAllan Munro Family Memorial Prize - Prose
$300 (MMPRI)
To be awarded annually to a student at Lakehead University on the basis of competition. Entries may be either fiction or non-fiction. All submissions will be judged by three members of the Department of English whose decision will be final. A Lakehead University Mr. and Mrs. James MacAllan Munro Family Memorial Prize - Prose Entry Form is available on the Office of Student Financial Aid and Awards website.

Laureen and Biff Weiler Memorial Award
$200 (LBWSI)
Established in 1987 by the family of Laureen and Biff Weiler in their memory. Awarded to a student entering his/her second or third year, preferably adult (as defined in Calendar), in the Bachelor of Arts (English) degree program on the basis of academic achievement and financial need. Community involvement may also be considered. Application available on the Office of Student Financial Aid and Awards website.

Elisabeth Stella Wydra Memorial Scholarship
$260 (ESWMI)
Established by Mrs. Wydra in her daughter's memory. To be awarded on the basis of academic achievement to a student, preferably of Polish descent, majoring in English, on the recommendation of the English Department's Scholarship/Awards Committee. Application available on the Office of Student Financial Aid and Awards website.

Millie Barrett Memorial Award
$1,380 (MBMAI)
Created by family and friends in 1992 in memory of Millie Barrett who was an instrumental force in the social, cultural and political fabric of Northwestern Ontario. (Information is available at the Chancellor Paterson Library, North Studies Resource Centre, regarding Ms Barrett's contribution to the Region). Awarded to a full-time or part-time undergraduate in-course student pursuing studies in the political, historical or social-cultural disciplines. The successful recipient will submit a written summary outlining her/his political and/or community involvement in Northwestern Ontario. Preference will be given to female or aboriginal students. Lakehead University History Award
$220 (HISAI)
Awarded to a second, third or fourth year student majoring in History, upon the recommendation of the Department of History, who shows promise in the profession. Application available on the Office of Student Financial Aid and Awards website.

The Tom Miller Scholarship in History
$1,650 (TMSHI)
Created in honour of Dr. Thomas Breech Miller by family and friends in celebration of his many contributions over many years to Lakehead University, especially as the founding Chair of the Department of History, and to the community of Thunder Bay. Awarded to a student entering the fourth year of the Honours History program on the basis of academic performance, community involvement and demonstrated interest in future graduate studies in history. Awarded by the Senate Undergraduate Scholarships and Bursaries Committee on the recommendation of the Department of History. Dorothea Crittenden Essay Awards in Studies of the Elderly

The Dorothea Crittenden Essay Award in Studies of the Elderly is offered to encourage students to engage in research regarding society's role in the changing needs of the elderly. Students are requested to submit the following to their academic unit: a letter of application and their essay. The academic unit will forward their selection to the Financial Aid Office, Lakehead University. Students registered full-time at Lakehead University in an undergraduate or graduate program in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or Nursing may enter the competition. Since awards are made to two disciplines each year, on a rotating basis, students are advised to clarify eligible disciplines with the Financial Aid Office. Application information also available on the Office of Student Financial Aid and Awards website.

Sophie Wydra Memorial Award

Awarded to an in-course student, majoring in Economics. Financial need may be considered. Awarded by the Senate Undergraduate Scholarships and Bursaries Committee on the recommendation of the Department of Economics.

 

ENGLISH

The Evelyn Halliday Scholarship
$520 (EVHSI)
Awarded yearly, in perpetuity, on the basis of high academic standing to a student registered full-time in the final year of an Honours program in English at Lakehead University.

George Merrill Scholarship in English
$1,000 (GMESI)
Created in memory of Dr. George Merrill, a long-time faculty member of Lakehead University, from 1963, until his retirement in 1997. Awarded to a student majoring in English and who has taken a minimum of one course in the study of Shakespeare.

Rideout Memorial Award
$570 (RIDEI)
Established in 1991 by the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. John Rideout. To be awarded to a high ranking student studying one of the following rotated courses - The Romantic Movement, Chaucer, or the Victorian Period and who is pursuing further studies in English. Awarded on the recommendation of the English Department by the Senate Undergraduate Scholarship and Bursary Committee.

 

HISTORY

Ernst Zimmermann Scholarship in History
$840 (ZIMSI)
Awarded to a student entering fourth year or third year (in that order) in the Honours History program. Consideration will be given to the student who has taken the greatest number of history courses in these areas: European History, Latin American History, Asian History. Awarded by the Senate Undergraduate Scholarships and Bursaries Committee on the recommendation of the Department of History.


LANGUAGES

German Canadian Association at the Lakehead Award
$320 (GCLAI)
Awarded to an in-course student to recognize outstanding progress in the study of German. Awarded on the recommendation of the German instructor in the Department of Languages.

Emma and William Kraft Memorial Prize
$300 (EWKMI)
Established by Mrs. Hilja Rydholm and supported by the family of William and Emma Kraft in their memory. Awarded to the student with the highest mark in any Finnish course. Preference shall be given to Canadian born student having Finnish ancestry.

 

MUSIC

William H. Buset Scholarship
3 x $740 (BUSSI)
Awarded to one high ranking student registered full-time in Business, Music and Visual Arts.

Mr. and Mrs. James MacAllan Munro Family Memorial Prize - Music
$300 (MMMUI)
To be awarded on the basis of competition to an outstanding music student on the recommendation of the Chair, Department of Music.

A.L. Musselman In-Course Silver Jubilee Scholarship in Music
$250 (SJAMI)
Awarded on the basis of competition to an outstanding performance student in the 2nd or 3rd year of the Honours Bachelor of Arts (Music) program or the Honours Bachelor of Music program. Awarded on the recommendation of the Chair, Department of Music.

 

PHILOSOPHY

The Doan, Penelhum, White Award in Philosophy
$180 (DPWAI)
Created to honour the contributions of past faculty members in Philosophy, the Doan, Penelhum, White Award will be granted to a student entering 4th year of the Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree program, majoring in Philosophy, based on a 'B+' average.

POLITICAL SCIENCE

Hubert Badanai Scholarship - Political Science
$700 (HBSPI)
Awarded on the basis of high academic standing to a second or third year student registered as a Political Science major.

The Geoffrey Engholm Award
$180 (GEASI)
The Geoffrey Engholm Award was established by his friends upon his retirement from full time service with the University in 1984. It is to be presented annually to an undergraduate student who demonstrates outstanding achievement in Political Science.

Margaret R. Sideen Memorial Award for Political Science
$390 (MSMAI)
Established by the Thunder Bay Municipal League and awarded, in perpetuity, to a student who has shown academic proficiency and leadership, and who is registered in his/her second, third or fourth year in Political Science. The student must be registered in or have taken a minimum of two courses dealing with Canadian Politics. Preference will be given to students from the nineteen municipalities served by the Thunder Bay Municipal League. The award will be made on the recommendation of the Department of Political Science.

 

PSYCHOLOGY

Charles King Hague Memorial Award in Psychology
$230 (CKHMI)
Awarded to a student entering fourth year of the Honours Psychology program. This award will recognize academic standing and outstanding student citizenship and is awarded annually in perpetuity on the recommendation of the Psychology Department.

The Logozzo Family Lakehead University 30th Anniversary Award in Psychology
$280 (LFPAI)
Established in 1996, this award will be presented annually to a full-time student from Northwestern Ontario registered in the third or fourth year of the Honours Psychology Degree program. Awarded by the Senate Undergraduate Scholarships and Bursaries Committee on the recommendation of the Chair, Department of Psychology.

 

VISUAL ARTS

Dr. and Mrs. J.R. Augustine Lakehead University 30th Anniversary Visual Arts Award
$520 (AUGVI)
Awarded to an in-course second or third year student registered full-time in the Visual Arts program who demonstrates excellence in studio work. Awarded by the Senate Undergraduate Scholarships and Bursaries Committee on the recommendation of the Chair, Department of Visual Arts.

Awarded to one high ranking student registered full-time in Business, Music and Visual Arts.

Mr. and Mrs. James MacAllan Munro Family Memorial Prize - Visual Arts
$260 (MMPAI)
To be awarded annually on the basis of competition (the Annual Juried Student Spring Exhibition - March/April) and on the recommendation of the Chair, Department of Visual Arts to an outstanding Lakehead University student in the field of painting, drawing, ceramics, water-colour, print-making or sculpture at the Annual Juried Student Exhibition.
