Gerald V. Hess Memorial Award
$590 (GVHMI)
Established in 1986 in memory of Gerald V. Hess by his friends, colleagues and family. To be awarded on the basis of recommendation to a student with at least a 'B' average who is entering the third year in a Bachelor of Science degree program at Lakehead University. Student involvement within the university community will be considered. Application available via the Financial Aid website.



BIOLOGY

Bruce Brian Baziuk, Maurice William Baziuk, and Sylvia Anne Benser Biology Award
$250 (BMSBI)
Awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Biology to a student entering the fourth year of the Honours Biology program with an average of at least 75% in the work of the previous year, who is undertaking a project in the area of environmental biology. Financial need may also be considered. Application available on the Office of Student Financial Aid and Awards website.

Thomas Cornell Memorial Award
$950 (TCMAI)
Established in 1987 in memory of Thomas Cornell, a long-time resident, horticulturalist and well-known nurseryman of the Thunder Bay area. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Dean of Faculty of Forestry and the Forest Environment, the Chair, Department of Biology and the Senate Undergraduate or Graduate Scholarships and Bursaries Committee to an undergraduate or graduate student who shows interest in the propagation and cultivation of ornamental trees and shrubs for Northwestern Ontario. This interest may be demonstrated through in-course assignments such as term papers, germination, propagation or outplanting projects. ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

J.P. Bickell Foundation Mining Award Program
Value varies up to $2,000 (A-JPBMI)
Awarded on the recommendation of the Senate Undergraduate Scholarships and Bursaries Committee, to a 2nd, 3rd or 4th year student registered in: BSc or HBSc Geology; BSc Earth Science; HBESc Environmental Studies with Earth Science; Chemical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Mechanical Engineering. Students must be enrolled in one of the afore-mentioned disciplines, with a minimum 70% average in the previous year and must demonstrate an interest in the mining industry. The successful recipient will submit a written summary indicating their areas of interest which may include; operational, environmental and geological issues or concerns. Application available on the Office of Student Financial Aid and Awards website.

PHYSICS

Bora Laskin Memorial Scholarship
$900 (BLMSI)
Established in 1975 by the Norman M. Paterson Foundation in memory of the Right Honourable Bora Laskin, who was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada from 1971 to 1980. This scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Physics to entrance students majoring in Physics. Awarded on the basis of academic performance and a detailed statement of the applicant's interest and career plans in Physics. Preference will be given to students pursuing studies and/or work in the field of energy and environmental science. In-course students are eligible to apply, only if the scholarship is unawarded at the entrance level. Application available on the Office of Student Financial Aid and Awards website.

Mr. Barney and Mrs. Edna Aris Lakehead University 30th Anniversary Scholarship in Science

$260 (ARISI)
Awarded to a high ranking in-course student in the Bachelor of Science Degree program. Awarded by the Senate Undergraduate Scholarships and Bursaries Committee.

ANTHROPOLOGY

Peter Barz Memorial Silver Jubilee Scholarship
$520 (SJPBI)
Established by Josefina Barz in memory of her husband, Peter, in recognition of his lifetime interest in archaeology. Awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Anthropology to a high ranking in-course student entering the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of the BA or HBA or BSc or HBSc Anthropology or BSc or HBSc Geoarchaeology program. The recipient must register in at least one archaeology course.

Biology Prize
$200 (BIOPI)
Each year the Biology Department awards a prize to the highest ranking full or part-time graduating student.

Dorothy E. Dove Award

$260 (DEDAI)
Awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Biology to a Lakehead University student of high academic standing entering the third or fourth year of a degree program in Biology (Botany) or Agriculture. This award recognizes the contribution made by the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition to the community of Thunder Bay.

Frank R. and Dorothy E. Dove Award
$260 (FDDAI)
Awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Biology to a Lakehead University student of high academic standing entering the third or fourth year of a degree program in Biology (Botany) or Agriculture. This award recognizes the contribution made by the Thunder Bay Horticultural Society to the community of Thunder Bay.

Thunder Bay Horticultural Society Award
$250 (A-TBHSI)
Awarded on the recommendation of the Scholarship/Awards Committee of the Biology Department to a student interested in horticulture. The student must major in Biology and have achieved a high academic standing in Biology 3114 - Plant Ecology. When the aforementioned course is offered in an alternate year, the Department of Biology may choose another course of similar nature.


CHEMISTRY

Bora Laskin Memorial Scholarship

Norman W. Simmons Scholarship
$550 (NWSSI)
Established by Hilda E. Simmons in memory of her brother. Awarded on the basis of academic standing to a student entering the final year of the Bachelor of Science or Honours Bachelor of Science, with a major in Chemistry.

Roy Saukko Memorial Award

$280 (SAUKI)
Established in 1995 by family and friends of Roy Saukko. Awarded annually to an undergraduate student in his/her third or fourth year or to a graduate student in Geology who demonstrates strong interest and potential in the exploration aspects of geology. The Department of Geology will forward their selection to the Financial Aid Office or to the Office of Graduate and International Studies.

 

MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Department of Mathematical Sciences Award
3 x $100 (DMATA)
The Department of Mathematical Sciences awards a maximum of three awards to students at the first, second and third year level, based primarily on the marks achieved in Mathematics courses. Only students enrolled in programs offered by Department of Mathematical Sciences are eligible.

Mathematical Sciences Prize
2 x $100 (MPRZI)
At most two prizes will be awarded to high ranking graduating students in Mathematics.
