Medals Awarded to Graduating Students

Governor General's Gold Medal
Awarded to the graduate student who achieves the highest academic standing (minimum 80% weighted overall average) in a Master's degree program, based on the required work of the Master's degree. The Master's program must be completed within the allowable time limit as published in the Calendar and all courses must have been taken at Lakehead University.

Governor General's Silver Medal
Awarded to the full-time student (including February term students) who achieves the highest academic standing (minimum 80% weighted overall average) in an Honours Bachelor's degree or equivalent, based on the required work of the final year. All courses of the final year must have been taken at Lakehead University, and the student must have been registered full-time in each year of his/her program.

Governor General's College Bronze Medal
Awarded to the full-time student (including February term students) who achieves the highest academic standing (minimum 80% weighted overall average) in an undergraduate diploma program (minimum two years full-time duration) based on the required work of the final year. All courses of the final year must have been taken at Lakehead University, and the student must have been registered full-time in each year of his/her program.

Chancellor's Medal
Awarded to the part-time (on or off-campus) student who achieves the highest academic standing (minimum 80% weighted overall average) in the Bachelor's or Honours Bachelor's degree program based on the required work of the final year. All courses of the final year must have been taken at Lakehead University and no more than three and one-half full course equivalents may have been taken during a single academic session.

Vice-Chancellor's Medal
Awarded to the full-time student (including February term students) who achieves the highest academic standing (minimum 80% weighted overall average) in the three year Bachelor's degree program based on the required work of the final year. All courses of the final year must have been taken at Lakehead University, and the student must have been registered full-time in each year of his/her program.

William A. West Education Medals
Awarded to the highest ranking graduating students in Education. Awarded at the discretion of the Dean of Education.

Poulin Award
(RPAWI)
An award for outstanding citizenship presented to the full-time student selected by his/her fellows, the faculty and administration as contributing most to the welfare of the University through his/her student activities. Current members of the Lakehead University Student Union; President, Vice-President (Finance) and Vice-President (Student Issues) are considered eligible for nomination. A Poulin Award Nomination Form is required. Nomination form is available on the Office of Student Financial Aid and Awards website: http://financialaid.lakeheadu.ca/.

The President's Award (Graduate)
An award will be given annually to full- or part-time student graduating with a Masters or Doctoral degree on the basis of academic performance. The student must have occupied a position of responsibility in any student organization and/or by their activities and achievements, have made contributions that have earned the special gratitude of a Department, School, Faculty and/or the University. A President's Award Nomination Form is required. Nomination form is available on the Office of Student Financial Aid and Awards website: http://financialaid.lakeheadu.ca/.

The President's Awards (Undergraduate)
Four awards maximum
Awards will be given annually to full- or part-time graduating students on the basis of academic performance. Prix du Consul Général de France à Toronto

Awarded to the graduating student with the highest standing at the undergraduate level in French.

Prix de l'Attaché Culturel de France à Toronto
Awarded to the graduating student with the highest standing in a French literature course.

Dr. James T. Angus Teacher Education Scholarship
$630 (JTASI)
Established in honour of Dr. James T. Angus, founding Dean of Education at Lakehead University (1969-1979), under whose direction pre-service teacher education, native teacher education, and graduate education programs were developed. Awarded annually to a graduating student in the pre-service education program on the basis of high academic achievement in academic courses and excellence in practice teaching. Awarded by the Senate Undergraduate Scholarships and Bursaries Committee on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Prize of the Spanish Embassy in Canada
Awarded to the student with the highest standing in a Spanish literature course.

Prize of the Ambassador of Switzerland to Canada
Awarded to the graduating student with the highest standing in the French, German and Italian languages.

Biology Prize
$200 (BIOPI)
Each year the Biology Department awards a prize to the highest ranking full or part-time graduating student.

Canadian Institute of Forestry Gold Medal
Awarded to the graduating student in the Forestry Degree program, who is judged to be the best all-round student in scholarship, sports and citizenship.

Canadian Association of Geographers' Prize
Awarded to the graduating student with the highest standing in geography.

Canadian Association for Sport Sciences Award
Awarded to the graduating student who achieves the highest academic standing in sport sciences portion of the curriculum. The award consists of a medal.

CMA Award for Excellence in the Study of Strategic Management
5 x $110 (CMAEI)
Awarded on the basis of recommendation by the Faculty of Business Administration to the group of students in the final year of the Honours Bachelor of Commerce Degree Program who have completed the best strategy report.

Geology Prize
The Department of Geology makes an annual book award to the best qualified student in the graduating class.

Mathematical Sciences Prize
2 x $100 (MPRZI)
At most two prizes will be awarded to high ranking graduating students in Mathematics.

Professional Engineers of Ontario Foundation for Education Medal for Academic Achievement
(OPEMI)
Awarded to the graduating student with the highest standing in the Bachelor of Engineering Degree program.

Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association Award
Established in 1987, the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA), will annually award $500, to a graduating student from Lakehead University's Faculty of Education consecutive or concurrent program. The student must have demonstrated academic excellence, having completed one or more of the following pre-service courses in preparing to teach in Ontario Catholic Schools: Teaching in Roman Catholic Separate Schools, Foundations in Catholic Education, Religion as a Teachable.

Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation Award

$350 (OSSTI)
The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF), will award annually $1,000, to the graduating Teacher Candidate who in the opinion of the Lakehead University Faculty of Education Awards Committee has secured a job with a public secondary school board and best exemplifies leadership, collegiality and academic excellence and has shown the most outstanding qualities of scholarship, teaching ability and character.

Society of Chemical Industry Canadian Section Merit Award
(SCIMI)
Awarded to the graduating student with the highest standing in the Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) degree program.

Dr. William A. West Memorial Scholarship
$1,000 (WAWSI)
Established in loving memory of Dr. West, long-time educator and founding Principal of Lakehead Teachers' College, which became the Faculty of Education, Lakehead University. Awarded to a graduating student with high academic standing and one who exhibits the potential to become an exemplary teacher. The recipient will have achieved the highest mark in Education 4280 - Curriculum and Instruction in English (Intermediate-Senior). Granted on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Prizes Awarded at Year End

The Ishak Book Prize
This prize is awarded annually to a student registered in the MA program in English who has demonstrated exceptional academic performance. This award was established to honour and recognize Dr. Fayek Ishak's contribution to Lakehead University and the English Department. The Graduate Committee in the Department of English will forward its recommendations to the English Department, who will approve the successful candidate nomination.
Deadline June 1st.

Philosophy Prize
A philosophy prize will be offered to students in each of the second, third and fourth years, for the best essay submitted in competition for the prize. The suggested minimum length of the essay is 2,000 words. Every prize need not be awarded every year.

Physics Prize
Each year the Physics Department awards prizes to the three Science majors, who in the opinion of the Department, have shown outstanding aptitude and achievement in the first year introductory physics course.

Prize of the Spanish Embassy in Canada
Awarded to the student with the highest standing in a Spanish literature course.
