1. Honours Bachelor of Social Work

Four Year program
The following pattern of courses indicates the compulsory and elective courses leading to the Honours Bachelor of Social Work degree. The courses listed below with course numbers are compulsory for the degree. If a student wishes to take courses other than those listed below, he/she must obtain the consent of the Chair of the School. All elective courses must be taken in consultation with the School.

First Year:
(a) Social Work 1100
(b) Four FCE electives

Note:
A total of 4 (four) FCEs of the 8 (eight) first and second year electives must be from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. The remaining four electives may be taken from any Faculty including the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Students are advised that they must apply for admission to Year 3. Since application does not guarantee admission, students may be admitted to an alternate program. Bearing this in mind, students should consider requirements for other programs when selecting elective courses.

Second Year:

(a) Social Work 2401
(b) Four FCE electives

Third Year:
(a) Social Work 3215, 3315, 3401 and 3501
(b) Social Work 3313 and 4411
(c) One FCE electives in Social Work

Fourth Year:
(a) Social Work 4217, 4401 and 4501
(b) Social Work 4212 and 4405
(c) One FCE electives in Social Work

2. Honours Bachelor of Social Work

One Year program
The One Year program is designed for graduates with an approved degree or students who have met the requirements for an undergraduate degree.
This program is open primarily to personnel from social service organizations who have an approved degree and secondly to those holding an approved degree and minimal related practice experience. This program may be completed on either a full-time or part-time basis. A formal application with the necessary documents must be received by January 15. Applicants should consult with the Office of Admissions and Recruitment to determine if they are eligible for advanced standing credit upon admission.

The following pattern of courses indicates the courses leading to the Honours Bachelor of Social Work degree for the one year program.

Summer Session:
(a) Social Work 1100
(b) Social Work 2401
(c) Social Work 4405

Fall/Winter:
(a) Social Work 3313, 3401, 4212 and 4300
(b) Social Work 3501, 4407 and 4411
(c) One half-course elective in Social Work

Spring Session:
(a) Social Work 4501

3. Honours Bachelor of Social Work with Major Concentration in Gerontology

Four Year program
Courses will be chosen in consultation with the Program Coordinator in Gerontology and the School of Social Work.

First Year:
(a) Social Work 1100
(b) Gerontology 1100
(c) Three FCE electives

Second Year:
(a) Social Work 2401
(b) Two FCEs in Gerontology
(c) One FCE elective in Social Work
(d) One FCE elective

Note 1:
Students must apply and succeed at being admitted before being allowed to enter Year 3 of this program.

Third Year:
(a) Social Work 3215, 3315, 3401, and 3501
(b) Social Work 3313
(c) Gerontology 3437 and 4770
(d) One half-course elective in Gerontology

Note 2:
SOWK 3501 or 4501 must involve social work practice with older people and will serve to replace Gerontology 4719 and a half-course Gerontology elective as a program requirement. Gerontology 4719 may be taken as an elective.

Fourth Year:
(a) Social Work 4217, 4401, and 4501
(b) Social Work 4212, 4405 and 4411
(c) One half-course elective in Gerontology

 

4. Honours Bachelor of Social Work with Major Concentration in Indigenous Learning

Four Year program

First Year:
(a) Social Work 1100
(b) Indigenous Learning 1100 and 1310
(c) One FCE elective in Indigenous Learning
(d) One FCE elective from Group I (see Social Sciences and Humanities Regulations, First Year Arts Program Grouping Requirements, page 219)
(e) One half-course elective

Second Year:
(a) Social Work 2401
(b) Indigenous Learning 2805 and 3501
(c) One FCE elective in Indigenous Learning at the second or third year level
(d) One FCE elective from Group II (see page 219)

Note 1:

(c) One FCE elective in Social Work

Note 2:
