C. Intermediate-Senior Specialization

Intermediate/Senior (Grades 7 to 12).
Intermediate/Senior students must take courses in two teachable subjects, Students must have a minimum of 5 FCEs in their first teachable and a minimum of 3 FCEs in their second teachable. In either case, at least 1 FCE must be at a senior level and exceptions to this are noted below. ("Senior level" denotes courses at a third- or fourth-year undergraduate level.)

Students may take any combination of two teachables except Chemistry and Physics.

Exceptions:
Business Studies - Accounting - Business can only be taken as a first teachable. At least 1 FCE of the Business courses must be in Accounting.
Environmental Science - Students who designate Environmental Science as a teachable will be streamed into the Outdoor Ecological and Experiential Education (OE3) cohort. Entry into OE3 requires either 5 FCEs (first teachable) or 3 FCEs (second teachable) from any combination of Environmental Science , Environmental Education, Ecological Education, Ecology, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Outdoor Recreation, Physics, or up to three from any of the following disciplines: Anthropology; English; Forestry; French, History; Native Studies; Philosophy; Physical Education/Kinesiology; Sociology, or Psychology. At least 1 course must be at a senior level.
French (as a Second Language) - Requires 5 FCEs in French for a first or second teachable, at least 1 FCE of which must be at a senior level.
Health and Physical Education - Students applying for health and physical education as a second teachable are not required to have 1 FCE at a senior level.
Can only be taken as a second teachable (requiring 3 FCEs, at least 1 FCE of which must be at a senior level). Courses counted toward this teachable may be any combination of at least two of: Anthropology, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology.
Music - Requires a Music degree.
Native Languages (with the language stipulated) - Students may use a Native Language Teacher Certificate of Qualification from the Ontario College of Teachers to qualify for Native Language as a second teachable.
Science - General - Courses used toward General Science may be any combination of at least two of: Anthropology (Science courses only), Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies (Science Stream only), Geology (Earth Sciences), Meteorology and Physics.
Social Sciences - General - Can only be taken as a second teachable (requiring 3 FCEs, at least 1 FCE of which must be at a senior level). Courses counted toward this teachable may be any combination of at least two of: Anthropology, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology.Can only be taken as a second teachable (requiring 3 FCEs, at least 1 FCE of which must be at a senior level). Courses counted toward this teachable may be any combination of at least two of: Anthropology, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology.
Visual Arts - Requires a Visual Arts or Fine Arts degree.

The Professional Year includes methodology courses on the curriculum and instruction in the teachable subjects. In I/S the teachable subject is normally, but not necessarily always, the same as the major subject of the bachelor's degree. The second teachable may be the second major of a double major degree, a minor with the major in a bachelor's degree, a recognized minor noted on the student's transcript, or merely the required 3 FCEs (except French, which requires 5 FCEs).

Four Year program
A cumulative average of 65% in all courses is required. See regulation #2, page 60, regarding the average in the major.

Students must choose two teachable subjects. See Intermediate-Senior Specialization page 71.

Note X3:
Each I/S student must:
(a) choose a First and Second Teaching Field (teachables). Consult the Chair for course selection.
(b) have a First Teaching Field consisting of 5 FCEs from one field choice, and a Second Teaching Field consisting of 3 FCEs from a field choice other than the First Teaching Field.

Courses will be chosen in consultation with the Department (see Note 2, page 249; and Note X3 above).

First Year:
(a) Psychology 1100
(b) One FCE elective from Group I (Women's Studies, History, or a language is recommended) (see Social Sciences and Humanities Regulations, First Year Arts Program Grouping Requirements, page 203)
(c) A minimum of one FCE in English, with at least one of the literature courses (English 1111 or 1112). For English Majors both English 1111 and English 1112 are required.
(d) One FCE elective from Group II (Geography or Women's Studies 1100 is recommended)
(e) One FCE in the teachable subject (the second teachable, if English has been chosen as the first teachable)
(f) Education 1499

Second Year:
(a) Psychology 2101 (see Note 2c, page 249)
(b) One FCE in Psychology selected from the core groups (see notes 1 and 3, page 249)
(c) Three FCEs in the two teachables, preferably two FCEs in the first and one FCE in the second (see Note X3 above) (If English is the first teachable, two second-year English literature courses should be chosen from: English 2240, 2501, 2601, 2701, 2702, 2903, or 2907.)
(d) Education Second Year I/S Core Courses. See page 72.

Third Year:
(a) Two FCEs in Psychology (see notes 1 and 3, page 249)
(b) Three FCEs in the two teachables, preferably two FCEs in the first and one FCE in the second (see Note X3 above) (If English is the first teachable, four of the third year English half-courses in literature should be chosen.)
(c) Education Third Year I/S Core Courses. See page 72.

Fourth Year (Professional Year):
(a) Education Professional Year I/S Core Courses. See page 72.

20. BA, BEd (Psychology Major) I/S

Five Year program
