3.
A "discipline" is an existing SSH or SES discipline

4.
A "specialization" is five FCE in a discipline

There would be one open elective FCE in either SES or SSH; the three year BASc student would not take Inquiry II, the 4th year honours course.

CONCURRENT EDUCATION PROGRAMS:

The Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Faculty of Education already cooperate in offering concurrent BA/BEd, BSc/BEd, HBA/BEd and HBSc/BEd programs. This proposal would add the option of an HBASc/BEd (P/J), and BASc/BEd (P/J). Concurrent HBASc/BEd (P/J), and BASc/BEd (P/J) students require 1 FCE of music or visual arts, and 1 FCE of mathematics or science among their selections from the Faculties of Social Sciences and Humanities and Science and Environmental Studies.

Students in concurrent programs will take two FCEs of Education Primary/Junior core courses in place of "open electives". They will also participate in a required practicum during Year 3. The completion of a Concurrent Education program requires one (1) additional year, the "Professional Year" which is necessary for teacher certification.

Students completing a concurrent degree while completing an HBASc: Multidisciplinary Studies should review the Faculty of Education's admission requirements and program listings starting on page 61 of the Calendar. The certification associated with the multidisciplinary program is at the Primary-Junior level for which students will be certified to teach Kindergarten to Grade 6. Students who are planning, upon completion of the concurrent degrees, to take additional qualifications to gain certification at another level should pay particular attention to the identification of "teachable" subjects within the first degree. In order to take the Additional Qualifications courses necessary for certification at the Intermediate level (Grades 7-10), students will require 3 FCEs in a teachable subject as pre-requisites for the additional qualifications courses. In order to take the Additional Qualifications courses necessary for certification at the Senior level (Grades 10-12) students will need 5 FCEs in a first teachable subject and 3 FCEs in a second teachable as prerequisites for the required additional qualifications courses.
