Graduate Program Regulations

Social Work Graduate Programs Regulations

In addition to the regulations outlined in the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, the following regulation applies to the Masters of Social Work program.

1. Reference Check and Professional Suitability
A criminal reference check is required for all students admitted into the MSW program. Within three months of admission, the student is responsible to obtain a reference check and ensure that the results are received by the Graduate Co-ordinator. Evaluation of professional suitability may be required prior to field placement.

Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Certificate Program Regulations

1. A student is subject to the general academic University Regulations and the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences Regulations as stated in the University Calendar.
2. A mark of at least 70% for each of Nursing 5610, 5615,5616, 5630, 5635, 5636 and 5840 will be required for credit. Nursing 5615, 5616, 5635, 5636 and 5840 have clinical components graded on a pass/fail basis. Students will be allowed to repeat one course, once only; i.e. not more than one course may be repeated. If a student fails the course on the second try, the student will be required to withdraw from the Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Certificate Program.
3. A student will be removed from the clinical area if his/her performance is deemed to be unsafe or unethical and it may ultimately result in termination from the program. Unsafe practice is any situation arising from a student's interaction with a client which places the client and/or student at risk for harm (refer also to the School of Nursing Safety Policy Statement). Unethical practice is any act that violates the principles and values as stated in the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses (2008) and the College of Nurses of Ontario Ethics Practice Standard (2008).

Graduate Diploma in Professional Kinesiology Regulations

In addition to Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, the following regulations apply to students in the Graduate Diploma in Professional Kinesiology program.

Registration
Students in the Graduate Diploma in Professional Kinesiology complete two 0.5 FCE (1.0 FCEs) in the Fall term, two 0.5 FCE (1.0 FCEs) in the Winter term, two 0.5 FCE (1.0 FCEs) in the Spring term, and two 0.5 FCE (1.0 FCEs) in the Summer term. An additional 1.0 FCEs is earned sometime over the Winter/Spring/Summer terms through completion of the practicum placement.

As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Masters Regulations, full-time graduate diploma students are not required to be in Thunder Bay on-campus throughout the duration of the program. Attendance at the Thunder Bay campus is only mandatory during the four half-credit practical courses.

Delivery
Courses in the graduate diploma program are offered through mixed delivery. Four courses (KINE 5310, 5331, 5350, 5370) are offered through online delivery of content. These courses also include bi-weekly synchronous contact (a 3 hour evening session) in a classroom setting, with a video conference option for those students not present in Thunder Bay.

The other four practical courses, each 36 hours in duration, are delivered face-to-face in a condensed five day period. Attendance on-campus for these courses (KINE 5315, 5336, 5355, 5375) is mandatory. Students must provide proof of valid certification in CPR-C and first aid prior to the start of the first practical weekend.

Practicum Placement
The practicum placement (KINE 5380) is normally completed between January and August. All placements must be approved by the practicum coordinator, in discussion with the student, prior to commencement. Placements are 200 hours in duration and can be completed on a full-time (maximum 35 hrs/wk) or part-time basis.

All transportation to and from a placement site is the responsibility of the student. The student is also responsible for any fees related to immunizations or police record checks requested by a placement employer.

Period of Study
Students in the graduate diploma program are expected to complete all requirements within three terms (1 year) of continuous full-time registration, starting in September. Students in the graduate diploma program are not currently eligible for financial support through the School of Kinesiology graduate assistantships.

Master of Nursing Program Regulations

In addition to Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, the following regulations apply to students in the Master of Nursing program.


Registration
Students in the Master of Nursing program will normally complete a maximum of three half-credit courses (1.5 FCEs) per term (fall, winter, spring/summer). A student who wishes to take more than three half-credit courses in a single term may do so only if the student has:
(1) at least an 80% overall average in the previous term, and
(2) the permission of the Master of Nursing Graduate Co-ordinator.
Students are not eligible to take more than three half-credit courses in their first term of study.

Clinical Practice Placement
The clinical practice placement (Nursing 5805) normally takes place after completion of the required courses and electives, and after all course grades are available. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the School of Nursing Clinical Co-ordinator at least 4 months prior to proceeding with the practicum placement, in order to ensure adequate time to plan the practicum.

Students must maintain at least a 70% overall Nursing average to proceed with the practicum placement. If a course must be repeated, it must be successfully completed before the student can proceed with the practicum placement.

The School of Nursing Clinical Co-ordinator will arrange one practicum placement for each student. Students should not solicit placements, and do not have the authority to approve clinical placements.

Safe Clinical Practice 
Unsafe, unethical, or unprofessional behaviour may result in dismissal from the program. Refer to the School of Nursing Regulations.

Clinical Documentation and Other Requirements 
Students should be aware that criminal reference checks and other clinical requirements must be completed well in advance of completion of clinical courses. Refer to the School of Nursing Regulations.

Minimum Satisfactory Academic Standing


1. General

As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations on minimal acceptable academic standing, graduate students must achieve 70% or higher in all courses in the Master of Nursing program. A score of less than 70% in any course will constitute a failure.

As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, no more than one course (weighted either 1.0 FCE of 0.5 FCE) in a Master of Nursing program may be repeated/replaced.


Period of Study
Students in a Master's program are expected to complete all requirements within six terms (2 years) of continuous full-time registration. As an exception, students in the Master of Nursing programs can be admitted to the Flexible (Flex) Option of six additional terms of continuous registration. As this option is intended for working professionals, students admitted to the Flex Option will not be considered for financial support. Note that students will not be permitted to change from the Standard Option to the Flex Option, and vice versa.

Psychology Graduate Programs Regulations

MA, MSc and PhD Degrees

A minimum grade of 70% is required in each course in the MA and PhD programs. (The requirement for the MA is an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Masters Regulation regarding Minimum Satisfactory Academic Standing.) A 70% or better overall average with no more than one full course equivalent graded C is required in the MSc program (see Graduate Studies Masters Regulations, Minimum Satisfactory Academic Standing). Regular attendance in all graduate courses is mandatory. Consequences of non-attendance will be specified in individual course syllabi.

To ensure that students are progressing satisfactorily toward the achievement of their academic goals, each student's progress is reviewed by the departmental Graduate Studies Committee according to the procedures established by the Department. Should any students be deemed unsuitable to continue for academic reasons or for reasons of personal unsuitability, such students may be requested to withdraw from the program.

PhD Degrees

(a) Course Requirements

(i) PhD, Clinical Psychology Field
In keeping with CPA Accreditation standards, students must complete at least four of their six half-courses in each of four cognate areas: biological, cognitive/affective, social/developmental, and individual differences bases of behaviour. A given half-course can fulfill only one of these cognate requirements. Successful completion of graduate level psychology courses taken during the Master's degree program can be counted toward an applicable cognate area, with the approval of the Psychology Graduate Studies Committee. However, such courses will not count as credits towards the PhD degree.

Competence in each cognate area is demonstrated by successfully completing a minimum of one half-course electives in each of the four areas indicated below:

Note 1:
With the approval of the Psychology Graduate Studies Committee, (i) Successful completion of an honours level undergraduate psychology thesis may be credited towards one applicable cognate area; (ii) Successful completion of graduate level psychology courses taken during the Master's degree program can be counted toward an applicable cognate area; However, in either of these cases, the student must substitute another credit(s) in its place.

Note 2:

These courses are typically offered only every second year.

All psychology graduate courses for which students meet the prerequisites are open to students in the PhD Clinical Psychology field. Some courses are required in order to obtain the PhD degree, whereas other courses are optional. With the approval of the course instructor and the Psychology Graduate Studies Committee, a required course may be waived if a student has successfully completed its equivalent at a graduate level; however, the student must substitute another credit in its place. Requests for course waivers must be submitted and approved at the time of admission to the program. To be considered for a course waiver, the student must submit a formal request to the course instructor, along with the official transcript and institutionally prepared course description(s).

(ii) PhD, Psychological Science Field
Students must complete six half-courses in any of the four cognate areas listed above: biological, cognitive/affective, social/developmental, and individual differences bases of behaviour. While any combination of these courses can be taken it is strongly recommend that students in Psychological Science take courses in areas that are relevant to their research interests. This includes taking electives outside of the Psychology Department up to a maximum of one FCE (i.e., relevant biology or chemistry courses for those researching the neurosciences). Successful completion of graduate level psychology courses taken during the master's degree program will not count as credits towards the PhD degree.

(b) Clinical Psychology and Psychological Science Dissertations
A written dissertation proposal must be submitted to the Dissertation Advisory Committee and defended orally by the candidate to the department, preferably by April 30th of PhD year 2. The oral PhD dissertation examination is the culmination of the candidate's research program. It exposes students' work to scholarly criticism by members of the university and gives them the opportunity to defend it. Students are examined by their Dissertation Advisory Committee and by an examiner from outside Lakehead University who has expertise with regards to the topic of research. Oral examinations are open to all faculty members, students and staff of the university and to the public at large.

(c) Practicum
Approximately one-third of the 600 practicum hours is devoted to assessment, and the remaining two-thirds to intervention practice. The department currently offers practicum placements for psychology graduate students at a relatively large number of sites located locally as well as outside of the city. Students working in these settings are supervised by doctoral-level registered clinical psychologists. All placements must be approved by the Clinical Placement Coordinator prior to the practicum start date.

(d) Internship
Students must complete a twelve-month full-time internship (or its equivalent) that is chosen in consultation with the Director of Clinical Training. Further information regarding requirements prerequisite for application and commencement can be found in the course description of Psychology 6092 (9092).

(e) Time Requirements
The PhD normally requires a minimum of three full-time years at Lakehead University, with a following internship year (CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY).
Candidates shall complete the requirements within five years, including one internship year (CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY) and within four years (PSYCHOLOGICAL SCIENCE) from the time of first registration.
Recommendation for a time extension beyond these limits will be forwarded by the academic unit to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Council for consideration and final approval.

(f) Failure
In addition to the regulations of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, a student who has failed a practicum, an internship, the Clinical Practice Comprehensive Examination/Clinical Practice and Research Examination (Psychology 6811), or the Science Comprehensive Examination (Psychology 6812), following remediation when appropriate, is deemed to have failed the program.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSIONAL REGULATIONS

In addition to the University Regulations, Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences Regulations, and the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations and Doctoral Regulations, of this Calendar, the following regulations of the Department of Psychology also apply to students in the Clinical Psychology MA and PhD programs.

1. Psychology Legislation, Standards, and Guidelines
By accepting a position in the Clinical Psychology MA or PhD Program and registering for the courses in the program, a student agrees to learn and abide by all the legislation, standards, and guidelines relevant to members of the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO). Prior to any client contact, all students will be required to sign an agreement indicating full compliance with the Regulated Health Professions Act, the Psychology Act, the CPO Standards of Professional Conduct, and the Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists. Students must also agree to comply with all applicable provincial and federal laws, and all of the Rules and Code of Conduct of the Provincial Licensing Board of Psychology of any province in which they may train. Failure to abide by any of the legislation, standards, and guidelines could lead to dismissal from the program.

2. Unsafe Practice/Unethical Practice
A practicum or internship clinical training site has the authority to immediately suspend a student from the clinical site on a short-term basis if the site suspects that the student's performance is unsafe or unethical. A clinical training site has the authority to terminate a student's practicum placement if the student's performance is deemed to be unsafe or unethical, and this may ultimately result in termination from the program. Unsafe practice is any situation arising from a student's interaction with a client which places the client and/or student at risk for harm. Unethical practice is any act that violates the principles and values as stated in the CPO Standards of Professional Conduct, and the Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists.

3. Professional Suitability
Students in the Clinical Psychology program have the responsibility of producing adequate information for proper evaluation of their professional competence, character, ethics, and other qualifications and for resolving any doubts about such qualifications. As per the CPO, students will be evaluated for competency in five area of skill and knowledge that are important for clinical practice: Interpersonal Relationships, Assessment and Evaluation, Intervention and Consultation, Research, and Ethics and Standards. Evidence of professional unsuitability with respect to any of these areas could lead to termination from the program. Where appropriate, remediation will be attempted first.

4. Clinical Activities
A Registered Psychologist must supervise students' clinical activities in regard to all client contact. Under no circumstance may a student engage in unsupervised practice. Engaging in clinical activities that involve direct billing by the student of a client on a fee-for-service basis is strictly prohibited. Please note that practicum and internship sites typically require their trainees to undergo a Criminal Records check and a Vulnerable Sector check, a child abuse registry check, and/or vaccinations/medical tests before the
commencement of practicum and internship training. Successful completion of such training is required for the Clinical M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. The students are responsible for the costs associated with these checks, vaccinations, and tests.

5. Graduate and Clinical Manuals
Students are expected to be familiar with and abide by all the policies and procedures in the Department of Psychology Graduate and Clinical Program Manuals.

Master of Science Degree in Kinesiology Graduate Regulations

In addition to Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, the following regulations apply.

Master of Science in Kinesiology Thesis-based

Registration
Students, under the direction of their supervisors, will make course selections to focus their studies in one of the areas of content.  For all graduate courses selected, it is expected that the student has completed a related course as part of his/her undergraduate degree.

All MSc students in the School of Kinesiology commence their studies in the Fall term only.  

Master of Science in Kinesiology Course-based

Registration
Students in the Master of Science in Kinesiology Course-based program complete three 0.5 FCE (1.5 FCEs) in the Fall term, three 0.5 FCE (1.5 FCEs) in the Winter term, two 0.5 FCE (1.0 FCEs) in the Spring term, two 0.5 FCE (1.0 FCEs) in the Summer term, and two 0.5 FCE (1.0 FCEs) in the second Fall term.

As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Masters Regulations, full-time course-based MSc students in Kinesiology are not required to be in Thunder Bay on-campus throughout the duration of the program. Attendance at the Thunder Bay campus is only mandatory during the four half-credit practical courses.

Delivery
Courses in the course-based MSc are offered through mixed delivery. Eight courses (KINE 5310, 5331, 5350, 5370, 5111, 5210, 5411, 5012) are offered through online delivery of content. These courses are offered in a classroom setting, with a video conference option for those students not present in Thunder Bay.

The other four practical courses, each 36 hours in duration, are delivered on campus during a condensed five-day period. Attendance on-campus for these courses (KINE 5315, 5336, 5355, 5375) is mandatory. Students must provide proof of valid certification in CPR-C and first aid prior to the start of the first practical weekend.

Period of Study
Students in this MSc Course-based program are expected to complete all requirements within 4 terms (16 months) of continuous full-time registration, starting in September. Students in this MSc Course-based program are eligible for financial support through the School of Kinesiology graduate assistantships provided they live in Thunder Bay.

Health Sciences Graduate Programs Regulations

In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, students in the Master of Health Sciences and Master of Public Health programs are also bound by the regulations listed below.
 
Registration
A Full-time student may register for a maximum of 1.5 FCEs for each of Fall and Winter terms, and a maximum of 1.0 FCEs in the spring/summer graduate term, unless an exception is granted by the Graduate Coordinator. For an exception to be considered, the student must have: (1) at least an 80% overall average and an 80% average in the previous term, and (2) there is space in the course of interest. Full-time Students are not eligible to take more than 1.5 FCEs in their first term of study.  
 
Full-time students must complete all academic requirements in 2 years (6 terms).
 
Flex-time students may register for a maximum of 1.0 FCE for each of Fall and Winter terms and no more than 0.5 FCE in the spring/summer graduate term. Flex-time students are not eligible to take more than 1.0 FCE in any Fall or Winter terms, unless an exception is granted by the Graduate Coordinator. For an exception to be considered, the student must have: (1) at least an 80% overall average and an 80% average in the previous term, and (2) there is space in the course of interest.
 
Flex-time students may complete the program requirements in a minimum of 3 years if the schedule and timetable allow. Flex-time students must complete all academic requirements in 4 years (12 terms).
 
All students admitted to Full-time on-campus programs must register in the on-campus offerings of required courses for the duration of their program. These courses are marked “LEC” under the delivery method on the timetable.  Students admitted to the distance or blended NP option in the Master of Public Health program must register in the distance offerings of required courses in the Master of Public Health program. These courses are marked “ZOOM” or “Web-based” under the delivery method on the timetable.
 
 
Period of Study
Students in a Master's program are expected to complete all requirements within six terms (2 years) of continuous full-time registration. As an exception, students in the Master of Health Sciences and Master of Public Health programs can be admitted to the Flex Option of six additional terms of continuous registration (12 terms Flex-time total). As this option is intended for working professionals, students admitted to the Flex Option will not be considered for financial support. Note that students will not be permitted to change from the Standard Option to the Flex Option, and vice versa.
 
Minimum Satisfactory Academic Standing
As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, graduate students must maintain at least a B overall average in their courses with no more than one half-course graded C. As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, no more than one half-course (0.5 FCE) may be repeated.
 
Thesis
a. Thesis Process
Each student in the Thesis Option will have a thesis committee which is approved by the Graduate Co-ordinator. The Graduate Co-ordinator will authorize the Thesis Option student to seek ethical approval after successfully defending the thesis proposal. Prior to submission of the final thesis grade, the supervisor will ensure that all recommendations made at the time of the thesis defence and by the external examiner, have been addressed.
 
As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, progress of students in a Thesis program will be formally evaluated according to the procedures established by the Department. Students with two (2) unsatisfactory evaluations of progression through the program will be withdrawn from the program.
 
b. Thesis within workplace
When any portion of a student's thesis work is to be carried out at his/her employer's premises, prior to proposing the thesis topic, a letter of agreement from his/her employer to his/her supervisory committee must be filed by the student with the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The letter must indicate, clearly, the scope and limits of the permission granted by the student's employer to carry out the work at the employer's premises. The letter must also give details of time slots that the employer may provide the student to carry out his/her thesis work at the employer's premises. The issue of liability insurance must also be addressed in the letter of agreement.
 
MASTER OF HEALTH SCIENCES (MHSC)
In addition, the following regulations apply to students in the MHSc program.
All MHSc students must register in and pass (i.e. final mark 60% or higher) Health Sciences 5015 in their first term of study in order to proceed in the Master of Health Sciences program.
 
Specializations
Applicants to the Master of Health Sciences program have the option of applying to complete one (1) specialization from among: Epidemiology; Gerontology; Indigenous and Northern Health; or Social-Ecological Systems, Sustainability and Health.
 
MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH (MPH)
In addition,  the following regulations apply to students in the Master of Public Health program.
All MPH students must register in and pass (i.e. final mark 60% or higher) Health Sciences 5010 in their first term of study in order to proceed in the Master of Public Health program.
 
Specialization
Students in Master of Public Health programs with Specializations in Epidemiology; Gerontology; Indigenous and Northern Health; Social-Ecological Systems, Sustainability and Health; Nursing; and Nurse Practitioner Electives must register in and pass (i.e. final mark of 70% or higher) in the Specialization electives.


 
Advanced Standing
As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations regarding Advanced Standing, applicants to the Master of Public Health Nursing Specialization with Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Electives who hold a current RN (EC) licence or equivalent and have completed the following graduate level courses or their equivalent with a minimum grade of 70% within the past 5 years from a COUPN Consortium program: Nursing 5610, 5630, 5615, 5616, 5635, 5636 and 5840; will have the following Master of Public Health courses waived: Public Health 5610, 5630, 5615, 5616, 5635, 5636 and 5840 and will be required to successfully complete Public Health 5010, 5013, 5030, 5070, 5210, 5213, and 5510 only.
 
Minimum Satisfactory Academic Standing
a. General
A graduate student who receives an "F" in Public Health 5805 - Master of Public Health Practicum and Report will not be permitted to repeat the practicum or continue in the program.
 
b. Nursing Specialization with Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Electives
As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations on minimal acceptable academic standing, graduate students must achieve 70% or higher in the following half-courses: Public Health 5610, 5615, 5616, 5630, 5635 and 5636. A student must also achieve 70% in the full course Public Health 5840. A score of less than 70% in these courses will constitute a failure. A failed 0.5 FCE may be repeated or replaced only once by another course specified by the supervisor. Any student taking the following 0.5 FCE with more than one 0.5 FCE failure on his/her record must withdraw from the program: Public Health 5610, 5615, 5630, 5635 and 5636. A student failing Public Health 5840 must withdraw from the program.
 

Practicum

a. Timing of Practicum
Practicum placements normally take place after completion of the required courses (Public Health 5010, 5013, 5030, 5070, 5210, 5213, 5510) and electives, and after all course grades appear on the transcript. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the Department of Health Sciences Administrative Coordinator at least 6 months prior to proceeding with the practicum placement, in order to ensure adequate time to plan the practicum. The graduate student must maintain at least a 70% average to proceed with the practicum placement. Any course that must be repeated, must be successfully completed before the student can proceed with the practicum placement. The Department of Health Sciences Administrative Coordinator will arrange one practicum placement for each student. If the student's actions jeopardize the planning of the placement (for example, does not provide the Administrative Coordinator with required practicum planning documents by the deadline), or jeopardize the placement that has been arranged, the student will be required to either secure his/her own appropriate practicum placement, subject to the approval of the Department, or withdraw from the program.
 
i.  Thesis Option
Students in the Thesis Option must have successfully completed their Proposal Defense and submitted their protocol to the Lakehead University Research Ethics Board (if applicable) in order to be eligible for their practicum placement.
 
b. Reference Check
Students in Health and Behavioural Sciences should be aware that criminal reference checks may be required and that unsafe practice and unsuitable professional behaviour can result in dismissal from the program.
 
c. Safe Clinical Practice
A student in the Nursing Specialization with Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Electives may be excluded from the clinical area when his/her performance is deemed to be unsafe. Unsafe practice is any situation arising from a student's interaction with a client which places the client and/or student at risk for harm (refer also to the School of Nursing Safety Policy Statement).
 
GRADUATE SPECIALIZATION IN GERONTOLOGY
The department of Health Sciences offers a Graduate Specialization in Gerontology for students who have been admitted to masters’ degree programs in Education, Health Sciences, Kinesiology, Psychology, Public Health, Social Work, or Sociology.
 
In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, and Regulations specific to the home academic unit and faculty, students in the Graduate Specialization in Gerontology are also bound by the regulation below.
 
Thesis, Project, or Portfolio
The thesis, project or portfolio, taken in the collaborating academic unit, must have a gerontological focus. Students must have a supervisor who is approved as a core faculty member in Gerontology, through the Department of Health Sciences. In the Thesis Option, at least one thesis committee member must be from an academic unit outside the primary discipline to support Gerontology's interdisciplinary focus.
  

Public Health Graduate Programs Regulations

In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, students in the Master of Health Sciences and Master of Public Health programs are also bound by the regulations listed below.
 
Registration
A Full-time student may register for a maximum of 1.5 FCEs for each of Fall and Winter terms, and a maximum of 1.0 FCEs in the spring/summer graduate term, unless an exception is granted by the Graduate Coordinator. For an exception to be considered, the student must have: (1) at least an 80% overall average and an 80% average in the previous term, and (2) there is space in the course of interest. Full-time Students are not eligible to take more than 1.5 FCEs in their first term of study.  
 
Full-time students must complete all academic requirements in 2 years (6 terms).
 
Flex-time students may register for a maximum of 1.0 FCE for each of Fall and Winter terms and no more than 0.5 FCE in the spring/summer graduate term. Flex-time students are not eligible to take more than 1.0 FCE in any Fall or Winter terms, unless an exception is granted by the Graduate Coordinator. For an exception to be considered, the student must have: (1) at least an 80% overall average and an 80% average in the previous term, and (2) there is space in the course of interest.
 
Flex-time students may complete the program requirements in a minimum of 3 years if the schedule and timetable allow. Flex-time students must complete all academic requirements in 4 years (12 terms).
 
All students admitted to Full-time on-campus programs must register in the on-campus offerings of required courses for the duration of their program. These courses are marked “LEC” under the delivery method on the timetable.  Students admitted to the distance or blended NP option in the Master of Public Health program must register in the distance offerings of required courses in the Master of Public Health program. These courses are marked “ZOOM” or “Web-based” under the delivery method on the timetable.
 
Period of Study
Students in a Master's program are expected to complete all requirements within six terms (2 years) of continuous full-time registration. As an exception, students in the Master of Health Sciences and Master of Public Health programs can be admitted to the Flex Option of six additional terms of continuous registration (12 terms Flex-time total). As this option is intended for working professionals, students admitted to the Flex Option will not be considered for financial support. Note that students will not be permitted to change from the Standard Option to the Flex Option, and vice versa.
 
Minimum Satisfactory Academic Standing
As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, graduate students must maintain at least a B overall average in their courses with no more than one half-course graded C. As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, no more than one half-course (0.5 FCE) may be repeated.
 
Thesis
a. Thesis Process
Each student in the Thesis Option will have a thesis committee which is approved by the Graduate Co-ordinator. The Graduate Co-ordinator will authorize the Thesis Option student to seek ethical approval after successfully defending the thesis proposal. Prior to submission of the final thesis grade, the supervisor will ensure that all recommendations made at the time of the thesis defence and by the external examiner, have been addressed.
 
As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, progress of students in a Thesis program will be formally evaluated according to the procedures established by the Department. Students with two (2) unsatisfactory evaluations of progression through the program will be withdrawn from the program.
 
b. Thesis within workplace
When any portion of a student's thesis work is to be carried out at his/her employer's premises, prior to proposing the thesis topic, a letter of agreement from his/her employer to his/her supervisory committee must be filed by the student with the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The letter must indicate, clearly, the scope and limits of the permission granted by the student's employer to carry out the work at the employer's premises. The letter must also give details of time slots that the employer may provide the student to carry out his/her thesis work at the employer's premises. The issue of liability insurance must also be addressed in the letter of agreement.
 
MASTER OF HEALTH SCIENCES (MHSC)
In addition, the following regulations apply to students in the MHSc program.
All MHSc students must register in and pass (i.e., final mark 60% or higher) Health Sciences 5015 in their first term of study in order to proceed in the Master of Health Sciences program.
 
Specializations
Applicants to the Master of Health Sciences program have the option of applying to complete one (1) specialization from among: Epidemiology; Gerontology; Indigenous and Northern Health; or Social-Ecological Systems, Sustainability and Health.
 
MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH (MPH)
In addition,  the following regulations apply to students in the Master of Public Health program.
All MPH students must register in and pass (i.e., final mark 60% or higher) Health Sciences 5010 in their first term of study in order to proceed in the Master of Public Health program.
 
Specializations
Students in Master of Public Health programs with Specializations in Epidemiology; Gerontology; Indigenous and Northern Health; Social-Ecological Systems, Sustainability and Health; Nursing; and Nurse Practitioner Electives must register in and pass (i.e., final mark of 70% of higher) in the Specialization electives. 
 
Advanced Standing
As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations regarding Advanced Standing, applicants to the Master of Public Health Nursing Specialization with Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Electives who hold a current RN (EC) licence or equivalent and have completed the following graduate level courses or their equivalent with a minimum grade of 70% within the past 5 years from a COUPN Consortium program: Nursing 5610, 5630, 5615, 5616, 5635, 5636 and 5840; will have the following Master of Public Health courses waived: Public Health 5610, 5630, 5615, 5616, 5635, 5636 and 5840 and will be required to successfully complete Public Health 5010, 5013, 5030, 5070, 5210, 5213, and 5510 only.
 
Minimum Satisfactory Academic Standing
a. General
A graduate student who receives an "F" in Public Health 5805 - Master of Public Health Practicum and Report will not be permitted to repeat the practicum or continue in the program.
 
b. Nursing Specialization with Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Electives
As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations on minimal acceptable academic standing, graduate students must achieve 70% or higher in the following half-courses: Public Health 5610, 5615, 5616, 5630, 5635 and 5636. A student must also achieve 70% in the full course Public Health 5840. A score of less than 70% in these courses will constitute a failure. A failed 0.5 FCE may be repeated or replaced only once by another course specified by the supervisor. Any student taking the following 0.5 FCE with more than one 0.5 FCE failure on his/her record must withdraw from the program: Public Health 5610, 5615, 5630, 5635 and 5636. A student failing Public Health 5840 must withdraw from the program.
 
 
Practicum
a. Timing of Practicum
Practicum placements normally take place after completion of the required courses (Public Health 5010, 5013, 5030, 5070, 5210, 5213, 5510) and electives, and after all course grades appear on the transcript. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the Department of Health Sciences Administrative Coordinator at least 6 months prior to proceeding with the practicum placement, in order to ensure adequate time to plan the practicum. The graduate student must maintain at least a 70% average to proceed with the practicum placement. Any course that must be repeated, must be successfully completed before the student can proceed with the practicum placement. The Department of Health Sciences Administrative Coordinator will arrange one practicum placement for each student. If the student's actions jeopardize the planning of the placement (for example, does not provide the Administrative Coordinator with required practicum planning documents by the deadline), or jeopardize the placement that has been arranged, the student will be required to either secure his/her own appropriate practicum placement, subject to the approval of the Department, or withdraw from the program.
 
 i.  Thesis Option
Students in the Thesis Option must have successfully completed their Proposal Defense and submitted their protocol to the Lakehead University Research Ethics Board (if applicable) in order to be eligible for their practicum placement.
 
b. Reference Check
Students in Health and Behavioural Sciences should be aware that criminal reference checks may be required and that unsafe practice and unsuitable professional behaviour can result in dismissal from the program.
 
c. Safe Clinical Practice
A student in the Nursing Specialization with Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Electives may be excluded from the clinical area when his/her performance is deemed to be unsafe. Unsafe practice is any situation arising from a student's interaction with a client which places the client and/or student at risk for harm (refer also to the School of Nursing Safety Policy Statement).
 
GRADUATE SPECIALIZATION IN GERONTOLOGY
The department of Health Sciences offers a Graduate Specialization in Gerontology for students who have been admitted to masters’ degree programs in Education, Health Sciences, Kinesiology, Psychology, Public Health, Social Work, or Sociology.
 
In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations, and Regulations specific to the home academic unit and faculty, students in the Graduate Specialization in Gerontology are also bound by the regulation below.

PhD in Health Sciences Regulations

In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Doctoral Program Regulations, the following regulations apply for the PhD in Health Sciences program.

Period of Study
Students in a Doctoral program are expected to complete all requirements within twelve terms (4 years) of continuous full-time registration. As an exception, students in the PhD Health Sciences program can be admitted to the Flex Option of twelve additional terms of continuous registration (24 terms flexible full-time total). As this option is intended for working professionals, students admitted to the Flex Option will not be considered for financial support by the University, but are eligible to apply for and receive Tri-Council (i.e., CIHR, SSHRC, and NSERC) and Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) funding within the first twelve terms of their program. Note that students will not be permitted to change from the Standard Option to the Flex Option, and vice versa.  

Minimum Satisfactory Academic Standing
As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Doctoral Program Regulations, graduate students who

(1)   either fail or have not completed the Comprehensive Examination (Health Sciences 6020) by the end of the fall session of Year 2 (for full-time students) or by the end of the fall session of Year 3 (for flexible-full-time students) are deemed to have failed the program;
(2)   fail the Research Internship (Health Sciences 6040) are deemed to have failed the program;
(3)   do not attend at least 80% of seminars in any one year (without prior approval from the Graduate Coordinator or provision of appropriate documentation) will be withdrawn from the program.

Registration
Students must complete 0.5 FCE from the approved electives list, a special topics course, or a directed reading course led by the dissertation supervisor.
