Indigenous Learning 2713 Critical Approaches to Health and Well-Being
In much of the western world, biomedicine has emerged as the dominant, or officially, legitimized health-care system. In the process, Indigenous ways of providing for the health and well-being of Indigenous Peoples have been not only marginalized but devalued and undermined, leading some scholars to conclude that biomedicine has become part and parcel of the "pathologizing colonial discourse" of the western world. Topics of discussion include diagnosis and treatment of disease, access to health-care providers, language and the transmission of information, knowledge hierarchies, and the ethnocentric basis of western science.
