An introduction to key events and forces that shaped the Balkan region during the modern era. Particular attention will be given to questions of nationalism, revolution, genocide, post-colonial politics, and social justice movements in Austria-Hungary, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Turkey and the former Yugoslavia.
