An introduction to the factors affecting the quality of life of people with dementia and their caregivers: the cultural, social and physical environments; social support; societal attitudes and intervention; and management strategies. Attention is given to 1) the diagnosis of dementia; 2) types, prevalence and course of the illness; 3) behavioural, cognitive, and physical symptoms; 4) ethical and legal issues; 5) professional management and treatment issues; 6) family caregiving issues; and 7) implications for health and social policy.
