Music 4900 Artistic Training (Performance Lessons)

Students will be provided with in-depth study of performance practices associated with stylistic interpretation of piano music from the 18th century to the present, including issues of phrasing, articulation, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, pedaling, and ornamentation correlated with the evolution of the instrument. Individual instruction. A prepared jury is required at the end of the year.

Program entrance requires a piano audition (in person or recording) which should demonstrate exposure to a wide variety of styles and represent the student as an artist with advanced musical sensibilities, technical accomplishment, and stylistic awareness. A study of the history, theory, and practice of Music Criticism. As part of the practical component of the course, students will compile a dossier of critical reviews of musical events and recordings.

Music 4952 Professional Development (Recital)

The student will perform a public recital of at least 45 minutes duration, under the supervision of a music faculty member. A minimum of 60% of the material should be newly developed repertoire that does not duplicate repertoire developed in the Artistic Training course (Music 4951).

Music 4953 Collaborative Performance (Supervised Performance Project)

Training will include working with a music faculty mentor to develop collaborative performance skills, with a short chamber music performance of at least 30 minutes duration presented by the end of the year.
